The Beasts Among Us

In Savannah, Georgia, 6-year-old Christopher Michael Barrios, missing for a week, was repeatedly sexually assaulted by a 32-year old convicted child molester and the man’s father while the mother/wife of the men watched. When they were done, they choked Christopher to death, put his body in a trash bag, and dumped him by the side of a road. Read more… »

Killer Pet Food

This week’s news that millions of containers of cat and dog food sold throughout North America may be deadly is horrible news for pet owners. Reportedly, there have been about 10 pet deaths after eating the affected pet food and an unknown number of cats and dogs that have suffered kidney failure. No doubt that “10″ is low since most pet owners and even veterinarians might not have linked the pet’s death with the food they were eating. At least not until now.  Read more… »

A “Mini Y2K”?

This Sunday, the U.S. goes onto daylight-saving time due to an energy-saving plan passed by Congress in 2005. The “spring ahead” time change will be three weeks earlier than usual and could cause major problems in home and business computers.

Granted, my computer won’t cause problems for anyone if it doesn’t change to the new time when it should. But what about computers that coordinate flight schedules, trains, subways, bank vaults, security systems, medical equipment, and a plethora of other things we take for granted and that I can’t even think of much less list.

How will the early time-change affect those people who are dependent on their Palm Pilots to keep them on schedule? Or the automated scheduling programs that some companies use to confirm appointments.

How much real energy will we save by “springing ahead” so early? And will the savings be worth the cost to businesses and consumers? No doubt we’ll read all about it… after the presses get back on schedule.

I’d Be Stunned, Too

The biggest lottery jackpot in U.S. history will be split between two lucky winners. Tuesday night’s Mega Millions jackpot grew to $390 million. One of the winning tickets was sold at a New Jersey liquor store. That winner hasn’t been identified as yet.

The second winner was a very stunned Ed Nabors of Atlanta. According to a news report, the big rig driver sat stunned in his rig until a dispatcher radioed to see what was going on.

What I’d really like to know, did Nabors call a limo and go home or did he finish out the day at his job? I’d call a limo, but that’s just me if I had won $195 million.

Your Vote Counts!

For the past five years, I have watched in awe as a young lady born in less than ideal circumstances has made an enormous impact in the lives of others. The young lady is Ashley Rhodes-Courter. Here is a recent interview that will give you some idea of just how far she has come in only 21 years of life. The interview by no means covers everything that this awesome young woman has accomplished.

She now is one of three exceptional young people who is eligible for a 2007 Golden Brick Award in the category of Education & EnvironmentTake a look at all the finalists and then cast your vote for one in each category.

Why I Despise US Airways

I’ve already blogged about an aborted and frustrating attempt to redeem US Airways’ Take Flight Certificates issued to my husband and I when we volunteed to give up our seats on a overbooked flight last October. The premise was that we’d give up our seats to someone who otherwise wouldn’t be able to reach their destination that day and, in return, we’d fly out the next day and get a free round-trip ticket to use on a flight sometime during the following year.

All sounds just great but trying to redeem the Take Flight Certificate is essentially impossible. Read more… »
