Active Duty For Deceased Officers?

According to an Associated Press story, the U.S. Army sent letters to about 75 officers killed in action urging them to return to active duty. The letters were among 5,100 sent sent after Christmas to officers who recent left the service. About 200 of those were sent to officers wounded in action.

I can understand how this happened. Somewhere a clerk had a stack of “when you get around to it” work. Unfortunately, there are some things that shouldn’t be put off.

Legitimate Or Spam?

CNS:  Fraud Alert!  Read carefully!

Hello,

We are writing to alert you to an incident which involved your email address.  A little more than an hour ago, someone using a stolen credit card number signed up for hosted services on our network and began sending bogus ebay notices.  The notice claimed to be from “Marina”, with a question about an ebay item.  The purpose of this notice was to steal your ebay password.  By clicking on the button to respond to the ebay notice, you would have been redirected to a site disguised as ebay and specifically designed to steal your ebay password.

This activity was identified by our rapid response team here at Commercial Network Services.  We immediately logged into the phishers virtually hosted server and caught them in the act of sending these fraudulent messages.  While we put a stop to it as quickly as possible, but we believe thousands of messages had been sent.

We have seized the phishers email list and are sending this message to that list - you - to alert you to this activity.  If you received a message claiming to be from an ebay member and inquiring about an item - DO NOT RESPOND TO THE NOTICE!  Instead, if you believe it is a legitimate notice, manually enter the ebay URL into your browser.  It is very important you do not click on the “respond now” link contained inside the message  as it will not take you to ebay!

If you received this notice and clicked on the respond link, we strongly recommend you logon to your ebay account * by manually entering www. ebay. com in your browser * and change your password immediately.

You should also be cautious in the future in that we know a phisher has your email address.  Please be very careful when receiving future notices like this one.  The best practice is to always visit the site in question by entering the URL manually in your browser and not clicking on the link contained in the message.

Commercial Network Services is a 12 year old online service provider.  We service a variety of online businesses from big to small.  Our services include web and email hosting, virtual servers, streaming media, e-Commerce and much more.  It is our intention to be a good online neighbor by responding to these threats as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,

Rapid Response Team,

Verizon

It seems I’ve hit Verizon’s blacklist. I don’t spam. I use email to correspond with family, friends, and business associates. Unfortunately, family and friends with verizon.net email accounts haven’t been receiving my emails for several weeks now.

After doing Web searches to see what, if anything, can be done, I’ve found that Verizon is being sued for their more-than-aggressive approach toward spam control. There’s a fine line between aggressive spam control and blacklisting every domain that sends out more than one or two emails a day.

I’m not sure that I can “fix” the problem I have with Verizon. One friend has made several attempts to get one of my domains added to Verizon’s whitelist without success.  My hosting company says they can’t help because the email are getting to Verizon’s mail servers. It’s at that point that Verison’s “aggressive” blockers are keeping it from getting to family and friends.

Here’s a site that explains the problem with Verizon in much more detail:  http://blog.kloppmagic.ca/archives/2005/02/24/verizon-450-requested-mail-action-not-taken-try-later-error/

Tattoo

New tattoo ink that can be easily removed has been developed by some doctors who expect it to be available shortly. Will tattoo artists use the ink? Some probably will, particularly if clients ask for it. Others won’t, sticking with their current inks.

The new ink is good news for people who have always wanted a tattoo or two but wanted to be able to remove it if necessary. Currently, the removal process is lengthy, expensive, and not necessarily 100 percent. That’s the bad news for about 50 percent of the people who get a tattoo and then change their minds. The new ink, which is permanent but removable with one laser treatment, may create an upswing in the number of people sporting body art, if only until they decide they’re tired of it.

176.0 And Counting

On this day in 1920, Astronomer Isaac Asimov was born. Today in 2007, 38th U.S. President Gerald Ford was remembered for his years of service as the president during some tumultuous times in U.S. history. A national funeral service in Washington, DC, today precedes a simpler service tomorrow in Grand Rapids, Michigan, prior to his burial.

The Most Popular New Year’s Resolution

More people have made losing weight their top priority for the new year than any other New Year’s resolution. I admit I’m doing the same.

January 2006 I was at my highest weight yet — 186 – since reaching my goal weight of 145 in 1993 after spending six months in Weight Watchers during which time I went from 175 pounds to 142. It took about a year for the weight to sneak back on and another year for even more weight to grab hold.

I’m quite tall so even at my heaviest I don’t look like a butterball but I am too big to fit into the majority of clothes in my closet. These aren’t size 2’s and 4’s. They’re respectable 10’s and 12’s and a few designer size 4’s (which are made large because the super rich just don’t wear anything larger than a 2 or a 4 regardless of how heavy they are).

So, January 2006, when I got on the scale and it topped out at 186, I resolved to get back to the 140’s. First step was to sign up for NutriSystem. After three months of their meal plan, I had dropped 10 pounds and was feeling pretty good. And then I hit a plateau. During the next three months I lost another two pounds. I tried exercising a bit (which I really, really don’t want to do) and finally got down to 168… and stayed there. Then slowly the pounds crept back. And, in the past couple of weeks, after too many holiday dinners, they’re really back.

This morning I weighed 177.4. It’s time to work again on getting the weight off and keeping it off. I’ve tried Weight Watchers and it worked but I don’t want to spend the rest of my life going to weekly weigh-ins. I’ve tried NutriSystem but my husband and I have a schedule that doesn’t make sticking to their meals an option.

I’m going to try something else. I’m going to post my daily weight here where you and I will see it. High, low, whatever, each morning. I plan on ramping up an exercise program and really monitoring what I eat. The numbers will tell whether or not I’m making any progress. I’d like to have a different New Year’s resolution in 2008, something that doesn’t have anything to do with food or weight.
