Old Enough To Know Better

In Alabama, a 70-year-old man shot a 62-year-old man during an argument about singer James Brown’s height. After being shot twice in the abdomen, the 62-year-old got a gun out of his car and returned fire… but missed.

The older shooter went to jail. The wounded man went to the hospital. The answer to the question that turned violent? No one knows for sure.

Eating For Who?

I got grumpy this morning with a waitress at a local diner where my husband and I stopped for breakfast before we headed to the office. It was quite early and, while he was in the mood for a large breakfast, I wasn’t the least bit hungry.

When I ordered a large orange juice and a cup of coffee, the waitress waited, pencil poised, for the rest of my order. “That’s all,” I said and held up the breakfast bar I’d brought with me.

“Are you sure?” she asked.

“Look, I’m on a diet,” I said, angry that, once again, I was having to tell a complete stranger why I wasn’t eating a “normal portion” of food. I’m always explaining to servers that I’ve eaten enough and they can remove my plate even though it still has food on it, and, no, I don’t want to take the rest of the food home with me and, no, there isn’t anything wrong with the way the food was prepared.

“I’m just concerned,” she said.

I’m having a 20 ounce glass of orange juice, a cup of coffee, and a South Beach Diet High Protein Cereal Bar (peanut butter flavored), and she’s concerned that I’m not getting enough to eat? My mother was never that concerned!

Sticking to a diet is difficult enough when eating with family and friends. (”Are you sure you’ve had enough?” “Just one more…” “Here, you have to try this.”) It gets ridiculous when complete strangers express their concerns about one’s eating habits.

Not Good News

I recently took the Real Age test which uses answers to questions regarding health, family history, and other factors, to determine a person’s “real” age as opposed to their actual age.

The results were not what I expected, projecting my age at more than a decade higher. Yes, I estimated some of the answers such as cholesterol numbers, etc, but seeing the figure in large, bold numerals on my computer screen was more than distressing.

It’s only a number, right? Excuse me while I run a few laps around the block. I’m preparing to retake a test.

Elvis Is Back In The Building

The annual Consumer Electronics Show, hosted in Las Vegas each year, is a fun time for those who enjoy way out gadgets. Hopefully, one day soon, I’ll get a chance to attend but in the meantime I have to be content with reading the reviews and updating my budget to make room for some of the new technology.

Apparently the most talked about item at the 2007 CES was the Elvis Presley robotic bust by Wow Wee. Wow Wee is the same company that sells a lifesize robotic chimpanzee head. The chimp head isn’t selling too well at $149 and I’m not sure if they have a winner or a loser with the singing Elvis for $349.

I’m a fan of robotics but Elvis isn’t going to be a guest in my office any more than the chimpanzee head. I’m saving my money for Pleo, a cute little robotic dinosaur.

Steal And Go!

A Miami development company may have defrauded individuals and companies in five or more states for more than $40 million, but the owners may not face charges. Last October, as the multiple land scams started coming to light, Sky Development’s owner, Natalia Wolf, fled to Frankfort, Germany.

The mess leaves a lot of people struggling to figure out whether or not their deeds are valid, and others trying to gain access to land they thought they had paid for. In one Florida area alone, Sky sold hundreds of lots they didn’t own and accepted down payments on houses they didn’t build.

Because Wolf’s “crime” is financial, German authorities won’t extradite Wolf to the U.S. to face prosecution.

Jailbait!

Picture this: you’re a young guy looking to hook up with someone fun. Or maybe you’ve just been dumped by your girlfriend. Or, maybe you’re older and your marriage is in the toilet.

And then you meet her. Maybe you meet in a chatroom, or at a church outing, or strolling through the mall. The two of you make a connection. You think she might be a little younger than you but there’s nothing innocent about her talk or her body.

What happens when you find out she’s only 15 despite looking and acting like she’s 25?
