Asexual Reproduction

Flora is a pregnant Komodo dragon housed at Chester Zoo in England. What makes her pregnancy news is that she got pregnant without outside help — a first for a Komodo dragon. “Parthenogenesis” is the process that allows at least 70 species of reptiles to become pregnant without male fertilization of the female’s egg.

Selective Service

Florida drivers who renew their drivers licenses by mail must sign the renewal application which includes the wording: “By submitting this application, I am consenting to registration with the Federal Selective Service System, if so required. If under 18 years of age, I understand that I will be registered when I attain 18 years of age as required by federal law.” I don’t know if other states have the same wording but since it’s “required by federal law,” most likely they all do.

Painful Death For Killer

In Florida, convicted killer Angel Nieves Diaz was put to death by lethal injection last Wednesday. In Florida’s prison system, before being executed, prisoners are given a last meal of anything they desire and the option to talk with a priest, minister or rabbi. Execution is done by lethal injection of three drugs designed to deaden pain, paralyze the body, and cause a fatal heart attack.

Diaz’s death didn’t go quite according to plan and he probably suffered a bit during his final minutes of life. For that, the governor of Florida has suspended future executions for an indefinite period of time. Doctors have said that Diaz’s death was probably “painful.”

And just how painful was the death of Diaz’s victim? Just how painful has the memory of that death been for the victim’s surviving family? Why do we owe convicted killers a “painless” death? Execution follows years of legalities and countless dollars expended. All the while, victims’ families wait for closure.

Our legal system appears to be lop-sized, protecting the guilty and ignoring the rights of the victim.

Killer Holiday Turkeys

A few years ago, my husband and I were driving to a vacation spot when we stopped at a buffet restaurant along the way — one of a national chain — for dinner. Seven hours later, I thought I was going to die. I spent most of that vacation in our hotel room, a victim of food poisoning.

Contaminated chicken was the culprit that turned a vacation into a bad experience but holiday turkey can do the same if it’s not prepared, served, or stored properly. It’s not just turkey that can turn a holiday celebration into an emergency trip to the hospital — or worse. Any improperly prepared foods can do the same.

According to an Associated Press article, more than 76 million Americans suffer from food-borne illnesses each year, and 5,000 die. Here are a couple good, eye-opening, articles that everyone needs to read: Preventing Food-Borne Illness and Avoid Illnesses Over the Holidays. And that turkey? Here are tips for proper preparation to avoid a holiday disaster.
