Books I Like

Pat Gaudette

While the majority of books that are sent to me to review deal with relationship issues, I also enjoy fiction and non-fiction books on a wide range of topics.

If The Man You Love Was Abused

Probably one of the most important books to be written in a number of years is one that won’t be made into a movie nor shoot to the top of the bestseller list. If The Man You Love Was Abused: A Couples Guide to Healing deals with the ramifications of his childhood abuse and neglect, which can create a lifetime of relationship problems for him and you.

If The Man You Love Was Abused is written by Marie H. Browne, Ph.D., with Marlene M. Brown, Esq. Marie H. Browne, Ph.D. is a licensed marriage and family ltherapist and professor of psychiatric nursing whose specialties include treating adolescent and adult victims of abuse, as well as their families. Dr. Browne is the mother of her coauthor, Marlene M. Browne, Esq., attorney, writer, legal analyst, lecturer, and a regular guest on radio and television programs.

According to the press release I received with this book, more than 4.5 million children are abused each year and boys are just as likely to be victims of abuse or neglect as are girls. But, men are less likely to seek professional help to deal with the outfall from that abuse and neglect. And, up to now, there has been no book written to help those men and the people who love them.

From the back cover:

The scars left on the hearts and souls of childhood abuse survivors run deep; they require time, patience, and support to heal. As your man faces his past, he will have no better support than you, his loving and devoted partner. But where are you to turn for hope and guidance in this difficult time?

If The Man You Love Was Abused is your lifeline. Written with both of your needs in mind and informed by case studies from real patients in the author’s practice, this reassuring work combines practical applications with authoritative research to offer you a complete plan to help heal your partner’s past — and move forward. You’ll learn how to help him get the support he needs, and make sure not to neglect your needs in the process.

You believe in your relationship, and you know your love will prevail over adversity. But for those times when it feeels like love isn’t enough, this supportive, sensitively written book is the place to turn.

If that sounded like a blatant pitch to buy this book, it was. If your man was abused, you need this book. If you are a man and you were abused, you need this book. It’s not easy to read. Nothing discussing abuse and its aftermath is. If The Man You Love Was Abused is an important support tool for any couple dealing with the fallout of his childhood abuse.
